Alonzo Williams served as the city of Apopka’s first black commissioner. Nearing his retirement in office, a park was commemorated in his name. I was sparked with one idea: a mural. My first mural. I met with our Mayor Nelson of Apopka to address logistics regarding the project. The most surreal aspect was being able to meet Mr. Williams at his park to interview him about his childhood and time in office. In the following days the news spread and we had the opportunity to amplify Mr. Williams’ story with local publications. Later that month, the park continued to be a home for families and an epicenter for community outreach programs.
